The Domestication of Humans

Don Miguel Ruîz describes a very interesting process he calls the Domestication of Humans.

That leaves you wanting more, doesn’t it?!

What on Earth does that mean?  It sounds illegal!

In a nut shell, this is his argument:

There is a point early in our childhood that we all, each and every one of us, creates in our Mind an image of perfection.

In this image we are liked and loved by everyone and we are flawless, perfect creatures.

We create this image of perfection in our Mind as a standard to achieve in the hopes of impressing those around us; as a way of earning the Love of Mom and Dad, our neighbors, friends, and religious leaders.

You get the point.

The problem is that this image of perfection is completely unrealistic and unattainable.

In our efforts to achieve this outrageous goal we set for ourselves subconsciously, we hopelessly and utterly fail.

This failure leads to Self-rejection.

Ruîz states that the level of Self-rejection is contingent upon how effective the adults around us are at breaking our integrity.

Ouch!  This is some deep stuff!

We move on from this domestication process to virtually hate ourselves for not being able to achieve the ideal of perfection that we set forth.

We hold grudges against ourselves, unable to forgive ourselves for not being what we believe we should be; for not being perfect.

This dishonor sets the stage for all of the hurts, scars, and abuses that come with a full Life.

However, the depth of the hurts, scars, and the severity of the abuse is a reflection of how much we hate ourselves for this “failure”.

He says, “In your whole life nobody has ever abused you more than you have abused yourself.  And the limit of your self-abuse is exactly the limit that you will tolerate from someone else.”

All of this sets us up for the Spiritual Journey that is The Four Agreements.

By incorporating these changes into your Life, Ruîz claims that your Life will be drama-free, and you will experience the most amazing transformations in your Self and your relationships with others.

Stay tuned for more on the agreements!
