Why you should be detoxing your hair

If you have been following my work for long enough, you know that I am big on keeping the toxins and chemicals out of my body and my home.

I have all sorts of ways that I do that (you can read about them here and here, as well as in several of my articles).

There are many ways you can cleanse your cell, organs, and skin with food, essential oils, and by leveling-up the products that you use in and around your home.

But have you ever considered the ramifications of toxic buildup in your hair?


The products you use are ruining your hair

I hate to say it, but it’s 100% true. The silicones and parabens in your favorite commercial products are creating building all the way down your strands of hair – from root to tip.

The buildup weighs down your hairs, making them heavy, flat, and limp. Just imagine walking around with a coat of wax on your hair, because that’s essentially what you’re doing!

In addition to buildup on your hairs, you also create buildup on your scalp.

The junk in your commercial products create a residue on your scalp (this is how many of them claim their effectiveness – just think volume enhancing products, which have to start at the root), and these residues are combining with the natural oils you secrete and store on your scalp.

Once again, this toxic combination puts weight on your roots and hairs, leaving your mane limp and thin.


Your hair stores toxins for a really long time

A single hair can take as many as 2-6 years to grow before falling out. Many tiny blood vessels in your scalp feed the base of each single strand of hair.

Each strand of hair is a microscopic snapshot of your health and habits. Your follicles even contain samples of your DNA!

During the years it is in place, the hair shaft absorbs chemicals, drugs, and pollutants (from the air and otherwise), and combines with your body’s natural sweat and oils.

Worried about toxic overload? You should be!

Scalp buildup is contributing to your hair problems

Scalp buildup can manifest as flakes, clogged pores, infections, and inflammation of your follicles.

Cleansing and exfoliating your scalp are crucial to hair health.

Cleansing with shampoos and conditioners that are free from sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, and other toxic junk will help reduce the weight of your hair while removing scalp buildup.


The best choices for any hair type

Norwex and doTERRA both make hair care products free from a long list of no-no’s. Find the products that are right for you and your hair type.

Detoxing your hair after a few good cleanses will be most effective, because you don’t want to put the buildup and residue back on right after stripping it off.

Choose from brands you can trust, and if buying commercially, be sure to read the labels.

Once you’ve given your hair and scalp some good cleansing and exfoliating, use this recipe to begin removing the residue and buildup from your hairs.

This will leave your scalp feeling amazing, promoting increased circulation and hair growth. It will also help your hair to feel lighter, look fuller, and respond better to styling.

Hair Detox Tonic

Cleansing and detoxing your hair is crucial for hair and scalp health, but can also positively impact your overall health.

  • 2 tbsp Organic Apple Cider Vineger with the mother (I recommend Bragg's)
  • 3/4 cup Purified water (boil water for 1 minute, then let it cool before use)
  • 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil (
  • 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil (
  • 1 Clean glass bottle


  • In your clean glass bottle, add the Apple Cider Vinegar.
  • Add the purified water. Replace the cap and shake well.
  • Include the essential oils. Shake again until well blended.
  • Apply to scalp and hair after shampooing. Rinse with cool water for best results
